Biomimetics - A Breakthrough in Anti-Ageing Skin Care
By Paul Fister of Omniderm
The term "biomimetic" means to imitate a biological process or function. In relation to cosmetics, it takes the concept of "natural skin care" to new levels of gentleness, effectiveness and results - not just "natural ingredients mixed into a cream" but formulated in a way that imitates the biological conditions found on young healthy skin. Scientific study of the skin's biology combined with a breakthrough in formulation technology have resulted in a revolution in anti-ageing skin care: Dr Spiller Biocosmetics. Next to UV exposure, the factors known to cause skin ageing are inflammation, dehydration and oxidation. Dr Spiller Biocosmetics meet these challenges head on: 1. Dr. Spiller's Hydratain emulsion system effectively counteracts inflammation because it works with the skin rather than breaking it down. Daily application of acid-containing skin products has been identified to be highly detrimental to the health of your skin - it remains in a constant state of irritation and micro-inflammation. Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics are free of harsh acids. The Hydratain emulsion system further minimizes the potential for irritation because of significantly lower levels of emulsifiers and preservatives. 2. Dehydration and related skin conditions (tight skin, rough skin, scaly skin) are symptoms of excessive moisture loss. They indicate a weakening of the skin's resistance to foreign pathogens and are directly linked to structural and functional changes leading to premature ageing of the skin. Independent scientific testing has shown that Dr. Spiller's Hydratain emulsions, in the words of three German dermatologists, "almost completely prevent dehydration". 3. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules. They may cause various types of cell damage, including lipid peroxidation as well as modification of protein and DNA, and are inextricably linked to degenerative changes in the skin. Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics feature anti-oxidants of proven effectiveness, some working in synergistic union, to effectively counteract and destroy free radicals. Biomimetics is not a new concept. 200 years ago, the English navy destroyed the Spanish Armada with a fleet of agile ships whose shape was modeled on the mackerel, a swift predator of the seas. A more recent example is the development of Velcro, following careful study of the seeds from burdock. Structure and function of the skin are highly complicated. Science has only recently give us the tools to better understand its biological processes. Mainstream cosmetic chemistry is not well placed to imitate the skin's biological functions. It took a breakthrough in formulation technology by Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics to obtain the fine balance required in a skin care cream for a "biomimetic" match. The results are highly significant: 1. Skin remains hydrated longer, as proven in independent scientific tests. 2. Oily skin balances - naturally. Hydratain doesn't treat the symptom; it takes away the cause for the skin's excessive production of sebum. 3. Levels of preservation are lower, thereby significantly lessening the potential for irritation. 4. Emulsifiers used are less intrusive on the skin's natural acid mantle, removing another potential source of irritation. 5. Delivery of active ingredients into the skin significantly exceeds that of comparative skin care creams. Scientific tests with alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E = 120% higher) and urea ("considerable concentration vs "barely detected") are positive proof. For more information, visit www.omniderm.com.au |
